In Public Speaking, ‘What Will People Say?’ Has Silenced More Voices in Lebanon Than Any Censor

Nobody banned your opinion. No official stopped you from speaking. No one took the microphone out of your hand. You stayed quiet because of four words you learned before you could read: what will people say? I want to say something plainly. That sentence has done more silencing than any censor ever could.

It Is Not a Law. It Is a Childhood.

A censor has to be paid, enforced, and obeyed. This voice costs nothing and needs no office. It arrives at the dinner table, at weddings, in the car on the way home from a school event. It arrives as love, wrapped in concern, from people who only wanted you to be safe. And because it comes from the inside, you never think to call it what it is.

You do not experience it as censorship. You experience it as good manners, as maturity, as knowing when to keep your thoughts to yourself. That is exactly why it works so well.

The Censor You Carry Into Every Room

Before you speak, you run the check. Who is listening. Who knows my family. Who will repeat this tomorrow. Who will remember it at the next gathering, the next meeting, the next time my name comes up. By the time you finish running it, your real opinion has been edited into something nobody could possibly talk about afterward.

You have heard me say that safe speeches are a form of dishonesty, and that you can edit yourself into invisibility. This is where that habit comes from. It is not a personal flaw. It is social training, and it was working on you long before you ever stood at a podium.

The Honest Counterweight

Let me be fair to the culture that raised us. Reputation and community are a large part of what has held Lebanese life together, especially in the hardest years. Caring what the people around you think is not weakness. It is one of the reasons we show up for each other.

So the argument is not to ignore everyone. It is that there is a difference between caring about people and being governed by an imaginary audience that has never actually heard you speak. The people you are afraid of in your head are almost always harsher than the people in the room.

What the Silence Costs

Every unsaid thing leaves a gap, and gaps do not stay empty. Someone louder fills them, or someone less thoughtful, or someone who never stopped to ask what people would say. A room full of careful people ends up led by the few who never asked the question.

The cost is not paid only by you. It is paid by the meeting that made the wrong decision because the one person who saw the problem stayed polite. It is paid by the student who needed to hear your honest answer and got your diplomatic one.

What I Am Asking You to Do This Week

Pick one sentence you swallowed recently because of what people might say. Just one. Say it, in a safe room first if you need to, to one person who deserves your honesty.

Then watch what actually happens. Usually it is far smaller than the story you were afraid of. The room does not collapse. Your name does not become a warning at family dinners. Someone nods, or disagrees respectfully, or finally says the thing they were also afraid to say.

People will say something either way. The only question is whether they are talking about the version of you that spoke, or the version that never did.

This is an entry in the Beirut Tribune Weekly Post, published every week.

Say it plainly. Say it once. Say it like you mean it.
