In Public Speaking, Toastmasters Rewards the Speech That Wins. It Was Never Built to Reward the Speech That Matters

You walked away with the trophy again. The scorecard said you won. Filler words counted, time hit to the second, structure exactly where the judges expected it. I want to say something plainly, and I say it as a Toastmaster myself, with real respect for what the organization has given so many speakers, including some of the fundamentals I still teach today. Even inside my own club, I have noticed the same pattern. A room built to reward the speech that wins is not always the room that produces the speech that matters, and those two speeches are not always the same one.

What the Scorecard Actually Measures

Time. Filler words. Structure. Gestures. All of it trainable, all of it visible, all of it countable by someone sitting with a clipboard three rows back. What the scorecard cannot measure is whether the speaker meant a single word of it. A speech can hit every category perfectly and still be entirely forgettable by the time the room empties out.

This is not a design flaw born of carelessness. It is simply what happens when anything gets reduced to a form. The form gets optimized. The truth underneath it does not always come along for the ride.

The Speech That Wins vs. The Speech That Stays

The winning speech is built for the judges in that specific room, on that specific night. The speech that actually matters is built for the one person in the audience who needed to hear exactly that message at exactly that moment. Those two targets do not always point in the same direction, and when a speaker has to choose between them under pressure, the scorecard usually wins, because the scorecard is the one thing being measured in front of everyone.

I have watched speeches take the trophy and disappear from memory by the following meeting. I have also watched speeches lose entirely and still get mentioned months later by someone who needed to hear that exact sentence on that exact night. Only one of those outcomes shows up on paper.

Why This Happens Even to Good Speakers

This is not a flaw in the people. It is the natural pull of any system with a scorecard attached to it. Once something gets measured, speakers unconsciously start performing for the measurement instead of for the moment. This is not unique to Toastmasters. It is true of any competitive format, any rubric, any room where a number gets attached to a talk afterward. The measurement was meant to serve the growth. Sometimes it quietly starts directing it instead.

What Toastmasters Still Gets Right

None of this erases what the club actually provides. It gives people a room to practice in when almost nowhere else offers one. It gives beginners structure at a stage where structure is exactly what keeps a first speech from collapsing. It gives every speaker repetition, and repetition, more than almost anything else, is what actually builds real skill over years of showing up. The scorecard was never meant to be the goal. It was meant to be the training wheel, useful early, and worth eventually outgrowing.

What I Am Asking You to Do This Week

The next time you prepare a Toastmasters speech, write two versions in your head before you commit to one. The version built to hit every category on the scorecard, and the version built to move the one person in that room who actually needs to hear it. Deliver the second one, even if it costs you points.

The trophy fades from a shelf eventually. The sentence that reached the right person on the right night rarely does.

This is an entry in the Beirut Tribune Weekly Post, published every Tuesday.

Say it plainly. Say it once. Say it like you mean it.
