You Are Not Nervous. You Are Lying to Yourself About What That Feeling Means

Your heart is racing. Your hands are damp. Your throat feels tight before you have said a single word. And the story you tell yourself in that moment is always the same one. I am nervous. Something is wrong with me. I need to calm down before I ruin this.

I want to say something plainly. Nothing is wrong with you. You are lying to yourself about what that feeling actually is.

The Body Does Not Know the Difference

Here is what almost nobody explains before you walk on stage or into a boardroom. The physical sensation of fear and the physical sensation of excitement are nearly identical. Same racing heart. Same rush of adrenaline. Same heightened alertness. Your body cannot tell the difference between “I am in danger” and “I am about to do something that matters.” Only your mind decides which story to attach to it.

So when you feel that surge before speaking and immediately label it fear, you are not describing your body. You are choosing a story. And that story is the one dragging you backward, making you shrink, rush, and apologize your way through a talk that deserved your full energy.

What Calm Actually Costs You

We have been sold calm as the goal. Breathe deeply. Relax your shoulders. Get your heart rate down before you speak. And I understand the instinct. But I have watched what happens to speakers who successfully calm themselves all the way down before walking into a room. They flatten. The energy that should have carried their words disappears along with the nerves.

The audience does not remember the speaker who looked comfortable. They remember the speaker who looked alive. Calm is not the secret to a powerful talk. Calm, taken too far, is how you end up delivering a talk nobody feels anything from.

You do not need less of that racing heart. You need to stop calling it the enemy.

Rename It, Do Not Remove It

Here is the shift that actually works, tested in front of rooms full of people who were certain they were about to fail. Do not try to calm the feeling down. Rename it. That is not fear climbing up your chest. That is readiness. That is your body loading the exact energy you are about to need.

Athletes have known this for decades. The best ones do not walk onto the field calm. They walk on charged, and they have simply learned to call that charge fuel instead of danger. Speaking is no different. The shake in your hands before you begin is not a warning sign. It is proof that you understand the moment is real.

What I Am Asking You to Do This Week

The next time you feel that familiar surge before speaking, do not fight it and do not try to breathe it away. Say to yourself, out loud if you can, “I am not nervous. I am ready.” Let the racing heart stay exactly where it is. Walk in with it instead of against it.

Watch what happens to your voice when you stop treating your own energy as a malfunction. That is not fear you have been carrying into every room for years. That was readiness, waiting for you to finally call it by its name.

Say it plainly. Say it once. Say it like you mean it.
